Refresh rate — measured in Hertz (Hz) — is the number of times per second your monitor redraws the entire screen. A 60 Hz monitor redraws 60 times per second; a 144 Hz monitor redraws 144 times; a 240 Hz monitor redraws 240 times. Each redraw is called a refresh cycle, and the time between cycles is called the refresh interval. At 60 Hz, the refresh interval is 16.6 milliseconds; at 144 Hz it is 6.9 ms; at 240 Hz it is 4.2 ms.
Higher refresh rates mean each frame stays on screen for less time, which means less motion blur, lower input lag, and a smoother feel for everything from cursor movement to fast camera pans. Refresh rate is a property of the monitor itself — it has nothing to do with your graphics card, your CPU, or the game you are running. A 240 Hz monitor refreshes at 240 Hz even when you are staring at a static desktop wallpaper.
How refresh rate differs from frame rate
This is the single most important distinction in display technology, and the source of endless confusion. Refresh rate is what the monitor does; frame rate is what the graphics card does. They are independent numbers that interact in important ways:

What each refresh rate tier feels like
The jump from 60 Hz to 144 Hz is one of the most noticeable upgrades in PC gaming. Here is what to expect at each tier:
- 60 Hz — The baseline for any modern display. Smooth enough for office work, web browsing, video playback. Visible motion blur in fast games and on rapid cursor movement.
- 75-100 Hz — A small improvement over 60 Hz. Marginally smoother cursor movement. Most users cannot tell the difference without a side-by-side comparison.
- 120 Hz — A clear improvement. Cursor movement becomes glassy. Aim tracking in games improves. Phones and tablets at 120 Hz feel dramatically more responsive than 60 Hz ones.
- 144-165 Hz — The competitive gaming sweet spot. Camera pans stay readable. Targets stay sharp while flicking. Most gamers consider this the most cost-effective refresh rate for serious play.
- 240 Hz — A smaller improvement over 144 Hz. Pros benefit; most casual players do not notice. Worth it for top-tier esports (CS:GO, Valorant, Rocket League).
- 360-540 Hz — Diminishing returns. Only worthwhile for professional esports players who can extract value from sub-millisecond improvements.
What VRR actually does
Variable refresh rate (VRR) is the most important display technology of the last decade. Without VRR, your monitor refreshes at a fixed rate (say 144 Hz) and your GPU produces frames at a variable rate (anywhere from 60 to 200 FPS). When the GPU produces a frame in the middle of a refresh cycle, the monitor either shows it immediately (causing tearing) or waits for the next refresh (causing stutter and input lag).
VRR solves this by letting the monitor change its refresh rate to match the GPU's frame rate. If the GPU produces 90 FPS, the monitor refreshes at 90 Hz. If the GPU produces 130 FPS, the monitor refreshes at 130 Hz. Each frame is shown exactly once, at the right time, with no tearing and no stutter. The only cost is a slight input lag penalty (about 1-2 ms) compared to VSync off — but the visual smoothness is worth it.

Common refresh rate problems and fixes
If you bought a 144 Hz monitor but everything feels like 60 Hz, here is the troubleshooting checklist:
- Windows is set to 60 Hz. Right-click desktop → Display settings → Advanced display → Refresh rate. Pick the highest option.
- The cable is wrong. Old HDMI cables cap at 60 Hz. Use DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 for high refresh rates at high resolutions.
- The game has its own refresh rate cap. Some games default to 60 Hz in fullscreen mode. Check the in-game display settings.
- VSync is forcing 60 FPS. Disable VSync in the NVIDIA/AMD control panel and in the game settings. Use G-Sync/FreeSync instead.
- The monitor is in the wrong mode. Some monitors have a "Game Mode" or "OC Mode" that unlocks high refresh rates. Check the OSD.
