How mouse polling rate works (and why it matters)
A computer mouse does not continuously stream its position. Instead, it samples its sensor at a fixed rate and reports each sample to the computer as a USB interrupt transfer. The frequency of these reports is the polling rate, measured in Hertz. A 1000 Hz mouse reports 1000 times per second — every 1 millisecond. The computer's USB controller receives each report, sends it to the OS, and the OS moves the cursor accordingly. The whole chain takes a fraction of a millisecond on a modern system.
Why does this matter for gaming? Because input lag is the sum of every delay in the chain: mouse sensor, mouse MCU, USB polling, OS processing, game engine, GPU rendering, display refresh. At 125 Hz polling, the mouse alone contributes 4-8 ms of average input lag. At 1000 Hz, that drops to 0.5-1 ms. At 8000 Hz, it drops further to 0.06-0.13 ms. The reduction is small in absolute terms, but it is the cheapest input lag reduction available — you do not need new hardware, just a setting change.

How to change your mouse polling rate
Most gaming mice default to 1000 Hz. To change the polling rate, you usually need the manufacturer's configuration software — Razer Synapse for Razer mice, Logitech G HUB for Logitech, SteelSeries GG for SteelSeries, and so on. Some mice have a hardware button on the bottom that cycles through preset polling rates; check your manual.
On Linux, polling rate can be changed at the kernel level with the usbhid.mousepoll boot parameter. Set it to 0 to use the mouse's default rate, or to a specific interval in milliseconds (1 for 1000 Hz, 0.5 for 2000 Hz). Note that not all USB controllers support sub-millisecond polling.
Why polling rate above 1000 Hz is controversial
Since 2022, several manufacturers have released mice with 4000 Hz and 8000 Hz polling. The marketing claims are impressive — sub-millisecond input lag, smoother cursor movement, more responsive aim. The reality is more nuanced:
- The benefit requires a high-refresh monitor. On a 60 Hz monitor, the difference between 1000 Hz and 8000 Hz is unmeasurable in feel. You need at least 240 Hz to perceive any difference.
- CPU usage increases. Each mouse report triggers an interrupt. 8000 Hz means 8000 interrupts per second per mouse, which on older CPUs can cause stuttering.
- USB controller congestion is real. If your mouse and keyboard share a USB controller, 8000 Hz polling can cause dropped reports from the keyboard.
- The actual input lag improvement is tiny. Going from 1000 Hz to 8000 Hz saves 0.44 ms of average input lag. Even top esports players struggle to perceive improvements below 1 ms.
The conclusion: 1000 Hz is enough for 99% of gamers. Higher rates are interesting technology but offer minimal practical benefit unless you are playing at the top level on a 360 Hz+ monitor.
